| | The college story The college opened its doors in 1894, with a ceremony presided over by the Prince of Wales. To begin with it was known as Battersea Polytechnic, a name that indicated its progressive intentions: to provide higher education for skilled workers across a wide range of industry sectors. It was later renamed Westminster Kingsway College. Some of the old boys and girls became famous. One was Alec (later Sir Alec) Issigonis, who designed the iconic Austin Mini. Others from more recent years, include celebrity chefs Jamie Oliver, Ainsley Harriot and Anthony Worrall Thompson. The unique history and character of the original buildings will be carefully maintained and respected in the new development. St James already has an enviable collection of beautifully converted and refurbished developments within our portfolio and Kingsway Square will be a spectacular addition.
